BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Separatists in northeastern Spain swarmed into Barcelona by the busload Thursday, waving independence flags as they demanded a secession sentiment vote that the Spanish government insists is illegal.
Many sported yellow-and-red shirts with the phrase "Now is the time" and shouted "Independencia!" in Catalan as they joined a mass protest getting a boost from Scotland's upcoming independence vote.
Quote:
Independence for Scotland would send a message to the EU that other European separatists deserve the right to vote on their future.
A recent poll suggesting that Scotland's Yes independence camp could possibly win the country's Sept. 18 vote has captivated a wide variety of groups in addition to Catalan separatists. Those include pro-independence Basques in northern Spain; Corsicans who want to break away from France; Italians from several northern regions; and Flemish speakers in Belgium demanding more autonomy, independence or union with the Netherlands.
Scotland, ha power!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it spans centuries of rule!!! what kind of iconic slayage and inspiration!?
I never get what is the problem with independence. If a large part of a nation's area wants to go on its own, as long as it's done with the utmost respect that's ok. Catalonia is demanding independence since EVER. I've been there and literally no one defines itself as "Spanish", catalan flags are everywhere and signals and magazine are mostly written in catalan rather than Spanish. I feel like the repression of independentistic wants will only took to more tension and strife. Just let them be what the hell they want to be.
The only thing i don't agree with is that a referendum for secession should be legal only if it's approved by 60-80% of the population, not only 50%
Lol that's not gonna happen, majority of flemish want to get rid of poor wallonia and become a rich flemish country.
wallonia being absorbed by france is more realistic that what you just posted
Yes the chances are slim that it's going to happen but Flanders on its own would make it irrelevant. I mean Belgium is barely holding its own against its ''big'' neighbours. Let alone an independent Flanders.
On the contrary I think it will bring Europe closer. The only bigger country within the EU which poses threat to the EU itself is the UK with their constant opposition of the EU as a project. A weaker UK and an independent Scotland will less likely leave or cause trouble for a unified Europe.
I believe in people's right to self determine where they want to belong the Scots and all other nations within the EU should have a say and have their independent parliament through democratic vote of course.

Scotland's independence won't just affect Europe, it will affect places around the world that are seeking Independence.
