$100K donated to unemployed woman who left kids in 100° car
EXCLUSIVE: 'Why didn't she ask us for help?' Mother given $100k by well-wishers after arrest for leaving kids in 100F car for an hour during job interview was 'too proud' to go to her family, they say
- Shanesha Taylor, 35, was arrested for leaving her two sons, aged 2 and six months, while she went for job interview
- Taylor, who claimed she was homeless, left them there for an hour and car was 100F
- Well-wishers have donated more than $100k because they think she is victim of circumstance
- But her great aunt told MailOnline she could have asked family for help and even called her
- She added that Taylor, who served in the US Air Force and used to live in a four-bedroom house, who is not homeless but lives with her parents
- She also believes she is a good mother who should not be treated harshly
- Her story has created a firestorm of debate on the internet. She faces jail and losing her children
Divisive: Her story has split public opinion between those who are supportive of a mother on food stamps trying to get ahead any way she knows how and those who believe she should never put her kids in danger under any circumstances. Others are also appalled that money is being raised for her
Quote:
Taylor is alleged to have left her tots in her Dodge Durango with the key still in the ignition and the windows rolled down an inch for more than an hour.
A witness called for help after finding the infants crying hysterically and sweating profusely as temperatures inside the car exceeded 100 degrees. Shanesha was arrested when she returned.
Sgt Mark Clark, public information supervisor for Scottsdale police, says she claimed she was homeless at the scene.
He said: 'Her initial statement to the officers on the scene was that she was homeless and she wanted to get the job. I think it was about one hour she was away from the vehicle, it was definitely not less than an hour.
'Someone who worked nearby heard the children crying, she called 911 immediately as it appeared they were in distress. They were taken out by emergency responders, we extradited them immediately.
'It was described by officers at the scene that both the windows were "cracked", which usually means open within an inch. She had a fan blowing as the keys were in the ignition but the engine was off so there was no air conditioning, it was blowing hot air into the cabin of the vehicle. It could have been over 100 degrees in there.
'It was about 45 minutes from the first call that she got back to the car and then we had witnesses that said it was about 15 minutes before that, that the kids were there.
'She was upset when she got there, that's when she made the statement that she had to get the job and she was homeless. I don't know the status of the children [now] that's a different agency.'
Her bail was paid for by a local church and the children were taken into the care of Child Protective Services.
After her tearful mugshot appeared on the news it caught the attention of 24 year-old Bishop from New Jersey who decided to set up a charity fund for the stricken mom - which has so far raised a staggering $101,086.
