Whitney Houston, the megastar singer/actress/producer, confirms that she is a legend, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.

"I knew that I was in this unique category and I had a million employees in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was a legend), they would think I'm arrogant" says Houston.

"I didn’t know: Could that be the end of other divas? So I had that weight on me of like, ‘Wow, if I ever confirm what everyone already knew.' So I just never did," she says speaking about her status for the first time with PEOPLE.

"The thing is, I’m not ashamed – that’s the one thing I want to say," she explains of her decision to speak out. "I don't think it's selfish or arrogant, I'm not going to feel sorry for the others. I'm more liberated and happy than I’ve been my whole life. I'm just happy."

As for why she's talking about this now Houston says, "The main reason I wanted to speak my mind was that it's not my fault that I'm bigger than life. Now it feels like it's on my terms. I'm at peace with my family, my friends, myself and God so there's really nothing else that I worry about. I'm a legend and the rest of the world knows it"

Hmmm...They're two entirely different artists. Knowles is more of a Diana Ross. Clive Davis separated Whitney from the rest of the black female singers. Whitney was the innocent girl next door with pipes like no other. Instead, Beyonce emulates more a sexual, ghetto girl persona in her appearance & music. Whitney was a Pop Princess moreso than an R&B diva. And lets not forget Whitney sold FAR more than Beyonce did and will ever have.

I think that Whitney, Celine, Janet, Madonna, and Mariah are legends. But I think that Celine is the biggest though. Not because she sold the most but because of that ridiculous Titanic song.

I don't keep track of Celine that much but isn't she the most consistent? Like w/ album sales. Madonna and Mariah had a few flops. I don't remember Celine flopping ever after she became big. That's probably why she sold the most. & she also has a consistent tour.

Well Madonna is just such a legend, everyone knows her name, she has done so much. Though Celine has known her share of controversy (marrying a guy old enough to be her grandfather) she's too reserved and private to be as legendary as Madonna.

I can see your point. Madonna and Mariah are more popular among younger people & their actions are more recognized. But maybe Celine proved that you don't need to be in the limelight all the time in order to be successful? & I think that her My Heart Will Go On song is probably the most remembered song in the past 15 yrs. I still can't stand to hear that song and that was years ago.
