- The film adaptation of the classic C.S. Lewis Narnia tale, 'The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe' conjured a magical opening exceeding well beyond Disney and other industry insiders expectations. Sunday estimates may be a bit underestimated as the power of Christian support groups in favor of this movie could project this estimated total to an actual of around 70 million come Monday night.
- Syrianna saw a successfull national expansion taking in a solid $6,860 PTA in under 2,000 theatres after two weeks of red hot limited play. Clooney is generating oscar buzz for this well reviewed oil industry pic
- In holdover land, HP4 continues to get diced and is well on its way to pass HP3 but crossing 300 million domestically seems out of reach now. But globally, the films cume is closing in on a towering 700 million. Just Friends, Your's Mine & Ours are holding up surprisingly well, unlike the other Thanksgiving frame opener Rent which has tumbled to a weak 26 million total gross.
But the big story?
- Well first. 'Memories of a Geisha', rode Oscar buzz and 8 theatres to an outstanding 84k PTA overcoming some initial bad reviews.
So leave it to Ang Lee's Cowboy love story 'Brokeback Mountain' to create headlines. In just 5 theatres, the film conjured an enormous, previously considered inconceivable $109,000 PTA in just 5 theatres. This is the highest PTA of 2005. The film expands into 60 theatres next weekend.
