I'm sorry, but I see a lot of talk about these two songs and videos being 'iconic'. I really don't agree with that. Where is the easily recognizable imagery? Where is the wide reference/impact on popular culture? What or whom do they represent?
In my opinion, Britney's only iconic songs/videos are BOMT and OIDIA, and BOMT much more so than OIDIA. I don't think Gaga has an iconic song or video but is rather an icon herself.
Toxix is an iconic song because it was one of the most popular/memorable songs of the entire 2000's decade. The video is iconic due to Britney being naked in that diamond encrusted thingy, and then the airplance scene etc..... is memorable. Same with Bad Romance. Gaga isn't an icon have to give her more time before she is even considered.
To clarify my question, where and how often has this image been referenced in popular culture? How is it easily recognizable to someone who does not follow pop as religiously as we do?
It is one of the most memorable images from one of the most memorable pop videos of this new millenium. The video's huge amount of popularity/ critical acclaim along with the song Toxic, that is still remembered almost a decade later. Proves everything stated above is iconic

But is it really memorable? Would a person more readily recognize a woman in a diamond leotard or someone in a ****ty school girl uniform or a black leotard and roboglove? You're telling me, but how can you prove that it is memorable?
Britney was voted the Sexiest Woman in the World in 2004 by a LANDSLIDE because of the music video. The diamond nude suit was copied by a lot of artists after she did it. The song dominated 2004 despite the fact that R&B and Hip-Hop was dominating. It's just a perfect pop song. Nothing more nothing less
