These two women.
People like to compare Gaga to Madonna, which is certainly justifiable, but I find her much more comparable to Cher and Grace. When Madonna did weird ****, she had legitimate reasons behind it. In this sense, Gaga is indeed comparable to Madonna except for that most of her "legitimate reasons" are either complete ******** or have nothing to do with what she's doing.
Now, with Cher and Grace Jones, they did weird **** just to do weird ****. They wore weird **** just to wear weird ****. They didn't wear it because "I am supporting the _________ people" or "I am doing this for the __________ cause/movement." When you see Gaga and hear the things she says, there's almost a bit of insincerity, a bit of distrust, in her voice. It is also perplexing as to why she makes up such reasons, because it makes her look even more ridiculous as opposed to her saying, "Well today I just wanted to wear something ****ed up and weird because I can." It's that distrust that's ruining her as a figure. She even wants to make her fans and the general public believe in the illusion that she's "the next Madonna" whereas she puts her Cher and Grace Jones inspirations on the backburner. I believe she's only cited them as influences a few times, whereas Madonna consistently gets praise from her.
