Some people need to accept that R&B as a genre has evolved and it's not a bad thing, it shows growth. Even in the 2000s the genre sounded different from what it did in the 80s and 90s. To hear modern day R&B listen to The Weeknd's mixtapes or Miguel's Kaleidoscope Dream for reference.
