I first heard about the #lemonadesyllabus about two months ago on my favorite podcast ‘The Read’ when Kid Fury and Chrissle gave the author/publisher Candice Benbow (link to her website where you can download the ‘Lemonade Syllabus’) “Black Excellence” for putting together this syllabus to create a deeper dialogue for women of color. Although I have yet to see ‘Lemonade’ in it’s entirety I was impacted by ‘Formation’ when it dropped and wrote this post. My favorite song is ‘Sorry’ because it makes me dance and singing those words ‘I aint sorry’ gives me an unapologetic strength. I started paying more attention to this syllabus recently after I kept seeing the #lemonadesyllabus on my twitter timeline. I figured that it was probably something silly, a parody of lemonade, but my curiosity led me to the website to actually download the syllabus. And to my surprise it is an actual body of work, over 200 resources, just look at the table of contents:
After I saw all the work that was put into creating this I became really excited, and started on my first assignment. The first book is the fictional book Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This isn’t the first time Chimamanda and Beyonce have been mentioned together, remember the song ‘Flawless’? Chimamanda is the voice speaking on feminism on the song.
I am going to do a reoccurring blog series titled #lemonadesyllabus sharing the things I read and learn and how it helps me as a black feminist.
