I'm just messing with him, but he rarely gets too caught up in debates as much as we do... at least not that I noticed.

The Velvet Rope is also ranked at number 256 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Control --- "Rolling Stone's 100 Best Albums of the 80's", Q magazine's "100 Women Who Rock The World", Slant's "Vital Pop: 50 Essential Pop Albums", Vibe magazine's "100 Essential Albums of the Twentieth Century", and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "The Definitive 200: Top 200 Albums of All-Time".
Musicologist Richard J. Ripani, author of The New Blue Music: Changes in Rhythm & Blues, 1950-1999 (2006), Control is regarded as one of the most influential albums in the history of rhythm and blues and the first album to bridge the gap between R&B and rap music.
And that's only a few sources.
Fact of the matter is, during Janet's prime, she was a HUGE critical favorite and had won tons of awards. Janet has been somewhat blacklisted since the Nipplegate incident, so it's not surprising that she didn't make the Vh1 list, which isn't exactly a list that is looked at in high regards. Let's not discredit Ms. Jackson because the proof is in the pudding.
|
The VH1 list may not be looked at in high regard but it was voted on by other artists in the industry (yes, I am aware that VH1 altered it to their liking). Other than the exclusion of Janet I do think it holds some credibility.
I still think Control and Rhythm Nation give Janet the edge in critical praise but I also agree with Ace's statement that Beyonce gets more overall praise and respect by various demographics.

They're respected on one side of the frame if you know what I mean. They are respected by Rock and Roll lovers and known mostly by them as well, Beyonce is respected all over the board.

As I typed before the site went down, I'd argue that Gaga and Beyonce are EQUALLY talented. Can Gaga sing and dance as well as Beyonce can? NO. Can Beyonce play an instrument or actually compose music? NO. So they are equally matched.
This insistence on vocals over everything else is troubling, to say the least.

She's not at their level. I just need to know that you know this. Joni Mitchell is THE most respected female singer/songwriter ever, and probably third overall after Dylan and LennonMcCartney. I don't think you understand the level of her impact.

Yeah. the janet. era was huge for her. I think it was her most successful era worldwide for her. Velvet Rope wasn't a hugely successful era for her, but it was her most praised era/album. I think Janet was done after her very successful All for You era. Her material just hasn't been good.

The only really HUGE stars nowadays are Beyonce and Gaga. No, don't say Katy Perry is a huge star.Katy Perry is an untalented joke who lacks a fanbase.

Hell no, writing and composing will keep your ass sitting in the background like Keri Hilson or Ne-Yo. Singing and Performing will make you famous and Gaga knows that **** too or else her ass wouldn't be prancing down New York in her panties or wearing bras to baseball games. The fact remains that if she didn't wear her costumes she would still be guest starring on the Sopranos.

And THAT is why Janet is not respected any more, and why Madonna >>>>>>>>>>>. **** a Superbowl - if Janet was still making even mediocre music, people would be here for it. Where is her Music, her Confessions? Oh, that's right - nowhere!

I'm not here for her nor do I care for her or the biased opinions of the rock age oldies who think The Beatles were the beginning and end of music.

I hate people who think Gaga owns Bey because of her recent success. Many artist have had success and then fell into the pit of irrelevancy.
