Unlike its predecessor Nevermind, this album is not at ALL pop friendly. I won’t say that it’s a bad album because the guitar work is impressive and the songs are still quite melodic, but it’s definitely outside my musical comfort zone. The sound is raw and at times rather abrasive. It’s almost like the band wanted to alienate the audience they had built up with Nevermind. Or maybe they just wanted to forge new territory musically. Also, from what I’ve read about Kurt Cobain, the lyrics for most of the songs weren’t necessarily meant to be interpreted in any sort of way. Either way, I think In Utero is an album that I’ll be able to appreciate more when/if I ever really get into more rock music.
Serve The Servants – This song starts out with a discordant electric guitar chord and dark energy never stops once this song starts. Solid. – 9
Scentless Apprentice – Apparently it’s based on a novel called Perfume. It’s decent enough. I love the melody of the chorus? B-side?. – 8
Heart-Shaped Box – This songs sounds more like something from Nevermind as far as the structure of the song goes. Lyrically, it sounds like it’s about a man-eating woman. – 7
Rape Me – The juxtaposition of such a catchy melody with such disturbing lyrics is unsettling. I think it recalls Nevermind more than any of the other songs on the album. Lyrically, it’s about a person being (no prizes) raped. It’s absolutely defiant in the lyrics though. A personal favorite. – 10
Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle – Nothing about this songs stands out to me at all. – 6
Dumb – I like the sound of this song moreso than any of the other tracks on the album. Lyrically it has something to do with drug use and the regret that it ultimately places upon the user? Lyrical interpretation correct or not, it’s one of my faves. – 9
Very Ape – Not one of my favorites. It’s all just ehh. – 5
Milk It – Another songs that’s very jarring. But for some reason the melody just gets into my head and I can’t help but like it. – 8
Pennyroyal Tea – The scrapped third single from this album roars along for three or so minutes before abruptly coming to a slow stop at the end. Not bad, not great. – 7
Radio Friendly Unit Shifter – The random ass feedback in this song really irritates me. – 4
tourette’s – Entirely too loud and cacophonic for me. – 4
All Apologies – Isn’t this on their Unplugged album. Yes it is! Gosh I LOVE this song. My friend (who is a hardcore Nirvana fan) showed me this song a few months ago. It’s so sad but it still manages to be beautiful in a way. I can’t say that about any other song on the album. – 10
Recommended To: Fans of Rock Music (though I’m sure they’ve all already heard it)
It took me a while to get into 'In Utero' and now I'm infatuated with it. The album has amazing range going from 'Scentless Apprentice' to a song like 'All Apologies'. Breathtaking.
'Dumb' is on another level, I'd say it surpasses The Beatles's best. Honest truth.

I was gonna originally have someone else present #18, but they aren't online ATM. Oh well.

One In A Million should be commended for bringing forward such a pronounced change in R&B music. Without Missy and Timbaland’s sound, who knows where the genre would be now. It’s quite arguably the most important teen album released during the 1990s. But that doesn’t make it a great album. This album is bogged down by filler and some songs wear thin quite quickly. Only fans of R&B will appreciate this album.
Beats 4 Da Streets (Intro) – It’s an intro…. It’s cute I guess. – 7
Hot Like Fire – This song is relies solely on its groove to push along, which is why it sounds tired after only about 2 minutes. Decent at BEST. – 6
One In A Million – This essential 90s R&B track is the most perfect summation of Missy Elliott’s and Timbaland’s collaborations during the 1990s. There are clear electronica influences, but the urban sound is never lost in the mix. The groove glides instead of lagging and Aaliyah’s sweet voice meshes with the music perfectly. – 10
A Girl Like You – A great rapper/singer collaboaration. Everything just works with this song. – 8.5
If Your Girl Only Knew – I like the production, but this song is waaaayyy too long and loses its spark pretty quickly. I can’t listen to it more than once every other month. – 6
Choosey Lover (Old School/New School) – This cover of the Isley Brothers’ song puts an interesting modern spin on the original during the second half. It’s cute, but I can’t say that it’s an improvement upon the original. - 7
Got to Give It Up – Marvin Gaye’s songs shouldn’t be covered IMO. It’s so hard to do him justice. Aaliyah’s take is cute, but Marvin’s version >>>>>>>. I recommend anyone who hasn’t heard it before to go listen to it. – 6
4 Page Letter – This song is like Hot Like Fire in that it lags and lags, but this song never sounds interesting. I would drag it for being so lyrically juvenile as well but Aaliyah WAS just 17 when this album came out. – 2
Everything’s Gonna Be Alright – Ehh – 6
Giving You More – See I Gotcha Back – 4
I Gotcha Back – Boring basic filler. – 3
Never Giving Up – Aaliyah’s vocals are the only positive thing about this song. It’s not good enough for how long it is. – 5
Heartbroken – See Hot Like Fire. – 6
Never Coming Back – This song is cute. I like how they tried to imitate a live performance in the studio. – 8
Ladies in the House – See I Gotcha Back. – 3
The One I Gave My Heart To – This is Aaliyah’s attempt at a Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey lite diva ballad. Though Aaliyah lacks the vocal prowess of those two, she manages to pull this song off quite nicely. – 7.5
Came to Give Love (Outro) – Honestly this song is quite repetitive but it’s a highlight of the album for me. I just love the music. It reminds me of her hit Are You That Somebody with the baby sounds in the background. – 9
