When you include non-Nielsen sales (Sony BMG and Columbia House), sales from countries without charts that still sold records, etc. BOMT is still ahead, though 21 will pass it very soon.

She might have sold albums, but she wasn't a phenomenon that people were obsessed with. Gaga's + Adele's peaks in impact COMBINED might be a better comparison.

Britney Spears and it's not even close. Adele is just very successful with her album sales, but Britney Spears was a force and a pop culture phenomennot seen since the days of Madonna.

Adele's peaker is much higher in the music scene while Britney's was higher in high school girls clothing fashion and typical pop add-ons that has no musical value (i.e dancing, fashion, perfume)
Adele, obviously. The incredible sales that no one else has, 30 Million albums WW. The Oscar, the multiple grammys, acclaim, respect from other singers, the great single sales and all by the second album. I mean...
Plus people respect her for her voice and talents which is the most important thing. She is a musician and has the critics and awards to back that up which hopefully means that she can last a long time
