It's not weird; it's called the false consensus effect, and everyone -- regardless of where they're from -- suffers from it.
The only reason other countries aren't quite as guilty of it in this context is because American culture is so readily displayed and distributed globally.
It's much harder for someone from the UK to be ignorant of many aspects of American life because it's broadcasted via news, movies, music, pop culture, etc.
