Some of these posts have nothing to do with the word 'iconic'. 'Legendary', 'Iconic' & 'Unforgettable' are three different words. 'Iconic' performances are very few, have music (insert genre here) culture in it, it's more about the cultural movement, specially pop culture. This is why Beyoncé's 'Single Ladies' performance was iconic & she was a genious to perform it instead of Sweet Dreams cuz she knew the whole thing was beyond her, it was a pop culture moment. & the audience was receptive enough to be on her feet, stood up, clapped, danced & even sang with her. This has nothing to do with stanning as well. That's the only iconic MTV VMA performance of Beyoncé.
Britney Spears' iconic performance was in 2000. It was just not a performance, it was the transition, Britney embracing her sexiness, becoming the beautiful & talented, but most of all, sexy young woman she was. She knew it & used that sexy skin tone outfit & her body was to die for, the whole performance, lip synched or not was on point. I remember at the time I was in awe, this was the Britney I knew. Her 2nd iconic was with Madonna & Xtina. That's it.
The three posted from Madonna are iconic.
MJ in 1995, of course.

Some of you have really twisted definitions of iconic. It means it changed MTV history, made an impact, covered magazines and is REMEMBERED today by not only fans but haters.
THAT, would be Britney's performances. Even a non fan can see that. Gaga, no. Beyonce, no. Mariah? Even though I LOVE her, no.
You people need to figure out that some of your favorite...just dont cut it.

Single Ladies performance was not iconic. The video may be, but not the performance.

I stopped reading after this. Media coverage doesnt define an icon or an iconic performance. At all. Too many performances will be remembered years from now not only by fans but haters, it doesnt make them iconic necessarily. MTV history was changed & impacted by only the great Michael Jackson for being the first black artist to appear there, reinventin music videos & eventually, paving the way for great performances and performers with his own work. The rest is all about 'the show', what or who it takes to have ratings concerning MTV & sales concerning magazines, mostly by putting the spotlight on the big white pop star of the moment, no matter how, that's it.
There is a difference between 'legendary', 'iconic' and 'unforgettable' this is also a part of my post. Britney has legendary & unforgettable MTV VMAS performances but 2 are iconic. You should think about it or agree to disagree. Single Ladies performance was an iconic moment to me & plenty of other people who were caught in the movement at the same time with her & her army of dancers in leotards, during this very moment full of extras, specially the people who never attended her concert, therefore, have never seen how the song is performed live. My opinion will stay like this & with respect, I don't need no one's cosign.
