Exactly. I'm a little surprised at some people on here, their logic being that she shouldn't have gone after Cathy just because of who she is. Come again? People in this thread have given multiple examples of Cathy herself having come under fire for the stupid **** she said, so clearly Gaga's far from being the first or only person to call her out on her bull. And Gaga isn't some up-and-coming nobody desperately clawing her way into the fashion industry and needing to be on absolutely good terms with everyone no matter how much **** they throw at her, this isn't The Devil Wears Prada. Just because someone's in a position of power doesn't mean that no one should have the gall to stand up to them when need be. And she's a ****ing fashion critic, not a politician. People within that industry are given way too much reverence for me, especially those that don't really do ****.

Well whether you like it or not, Cathy is highly respected and when you want to become an accepted part of an industry, as with anything, you don't disrespect those who are highly revered and considered important. That's just common knowledge and sense. So yes, Gaga was right. And sure, Cathy gets too much respect. But at the end of the day, Cathy gets respect and Gaga should not be critiquing her when she is highly respected in an industry she hopes to become accepted in.

Oh, I completely agree. What Gaga said was true, and I'm not denying that. But it was a very dumb move on her part, and that's my point.

Only dumb if you value sycophancy over using the platform made available to express your concerns and raise relevant, interesting discussion.

But didn't Cathy have a go at Gaga first? I don't buy that someone in a certain position should never be challenged whatsoever because of their position. Aren't we the ones that give such people that type of power?
Gaga didn't just sling insults at her for the sake of it, she made a very intelligent and well-rounded argument. I think part of being respected in a certain establishment is also not being afraid to challenge it when it's warranted, as is the case here. And Gaga can afford to do so in her case. With her level of fame, I highly doubt that the fashion world will cut off all contact with her just because she stood up to Cathy.

Now you guys are really starting to dig into why her insight might be worth your time. The whole point of her article is that you shouldn't let someone's -- ANYONE'S -- position as a respected or knowledgeable person in some arena substitute for actual substance. Just because they've been around for a long time doesn't mean that blank criticism, without substance or reasoning, should be accepted lightly.
She's merely pointing out that a critic should take the time to actually critique their subjects, as opposed to insulting. The latter is for an opinionated person with a blog and not the job of the critic.
|
But then she's just discrediting the whole critic profession. If anyone here took the time to really read some of Cathy's articles you'll see she's not just talking ****, she's extremely intelligent and knows what she's saying.

No, she's saying the critics should do their job by providing substantive criticism. I'm honestly not familiar with Cathy to know where she falls on that spectrum, but the argument Gaga presented is sound in the context of general application.

If your president started making ridiculous laws because he was bored, wouldn't you say something?

This. Professional criticism != stating opinions. It involves the study and evaluation of a work in a manner that provides substantive criticism.

Cathy didn't wrote about Gaga for no reason, it was a part of her job. If people *her fans* don't like it, i'm sorry but they will have to deal with it. Gaga's article may sounded harmless, but really she wrote that for revenge. But the thing is that Cathy did it for her job, and Gaga use her column to take personal issues. And that's not very professional from her.

Extemely intelligent.. yeah, sure. If that's extreme intelligence, then I can only imagine what stupidity must be like.

That could just as easily be seen from the other perspective. Cathy clearly dislikes Gaga and targets her repeatedly (from the examples posted here, without saying much other than insults). In fact, the way she emphasized the fact that she was unfollowing Gaga on Twitter makes me think she's writing her articles because of a personal dislike towards Gaga. Gaga's job is writing a fashion column, and at least she generalizes her argument beyond Cathy to make a greater point.

I know enough about her that she doesn't deserve a fraction of the ass-kissing that she's being bestowed.

People keep saying it was a bad decision for her to be so vocal, but no one says WHY... This false sense of worry reminds me when gaga was interviewed in 2008 and the interviewer was insistently implying that her overt sexuality would hamper her image, and she finally responded " I'm not scared... Are you scared?"

Too bad, as we say here: she remains unbothered.

I mean, are you seriously that big of a Cathy stan? Who knew?
It's not as if the article was a hate article toward Cathy, if anything Gaga was trying to make a point about all critics.
She's allowed to speak her mind, whether it bothers you or not.
Who's to say that Cathy knows what she's talking about?
I'm not trying to discredit her as a critic at all, I'm sure she's professional + fantastic.
But the point of Gaga's column was to question the idea of why certain people's opinions/critiques matter more than others.
I just kinda feel like you're getting way too bent out of shape over it, that's why I asked.

It's stupid to call out critics since it's their job to criticize. Even the troll ones shouldn't be called out by artists. But artists have always hated and called out critics. And they've actually attacked them, which despite what the thread title says this is not. Idk why Britney stans are so riled up. Hasn't 90% of Britney's music and videos consisted of bitching and moaning about her critics who just won't leave her alone?
