There was no real reason for her turning him into sand from what I saw, but someone explained to me that anything with "Allah" on it is sacred and should be carefully looked after. She destroyed the man which made the necklace fall, which disrespected Muslim principles. That's wrong, joke or not.

I definitely understand why it's offensive, I would be mad if someone purposefully destroyed a cross with Jesus on it too. But the thing is, Katy didn't do it on purpose. She turned a man to dust who happened to be wearing a necklace with the word Allah written on it -- to me, it seems like the director of the video just ordered anything Arab/Middle Eastern/Ancient Egyptian in style, and threw the prettiest props on to the men. Although I personally think there was a tad bit of an overreaction, I completely understand why some people would be offended over it. In the end, everyone wins as the necklace was edited out and Katy still gets her views.
