"Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake
From The 20/20 Experience
Pop
This is one of the best pop singles of the year hands down. It's not the most fresh or innovative tune, but it's classic Justin - and with that, how can you go wrong? It's a catchy, anthemic, brilliantly produced pop track.
"I Could Be the One" by Avicii & Nicky Romero
- standalone release -
Dance/Electronic
This song was hyped up a lot, and many were worried that it wouldn't live up to the epic song it was supposed to be. Then it dropped - and guess what? IT WAS AWESOME. It features brilliant pop vocals over an energized and melodic instrumental. It also has
an amazing video tbh.
"Suit & Tie" by Justin Timberlake
From The 20/20 Experience
Pop/R&B
This song is mellower and has a more R&B groove than Justin's last entry on the countdown, and it works well for him. This was a grower at first, but its appeal lasted all year long and it's become a staple on all my playlists. Also, listening to it makes me feel fancy and ****.
"Spaceship Coupe" by Justin Timberlake
From The 20/20 Experience
Pop
Oh look, more Justin! I promise that this one is the last one this set. In fact, he only has two more on the whole countdown! But yeah, this song is awesome. For some reason it grabs me more immediately than his other songs and is more fun/interesting to throw on repeat.
"Girls/Girls/Boys" by Panic! at the Disco
From Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!
Pop?
Panic! still has a knack for making some ridiculously catchy music. Sure, this is really no IWSNT and isn't really a "Ballad of Mona Lisa" either, but it's pure fun with a sly nod at bisexuality included in the lyrics.
"Alone Together" by Fall Out Boy
From Save Rock and Roll
Pop Rock
Is it awkward that I have these songs right beside each other? I think it's weird. It feels wrong. Anyway, this is a great anthemic song that ingrains itself into your mind until you can't help but sing along. Also, Fall Out Boy. In 2013. Pretty interesting.
"Team" by Lorde
From Pure Heroine
Alternative, apparently
So this girl is a little, well, pretentious. But not so much that she's unbearable, really. Plus, she needs more credit musically. "Team" is one of the best examples of this very young artist's brilliant work, and its worth more than a few listens. One of the best qualities in Lorde's work is her unabashed honesty and the fact that she comes from a personal place with her work, something that might not be said about a lot of others on my countdown.
"American" by Lana Del Rey
From Paradise
Pop
Lana is an oddity to me. I don't really know what to call her - pop? Alternative? Alternative Americana pop? Whatever the hell you call her music, it's damn good. "American" is one of the top songs on her new(er than BTD) EP, and it deserves a lot of praise for the instrumentation and singing. Lana might not be the best singer technically, but she knows how to use her voice well to her advantage.
"American Girl" by Bonnie McKee
From [Nobody really knows her album title yet, do they?]
Pop
I don't know how this ended up so low, actually, because this song slays careers. It's got the Teenage Dream sound and feel that Bonnie is likely largely responsible for creating, with something like 4+ songs on that album including the godly title track. Bonnie uses that formula perhaps even more convincingly than Katy herself. I often put on some crappy 80's style red & white hipster sunglasses, roll down my windows, and blast this song to the unsuspecting streets of my small town, with my voice trailing faintly behind Bonnie's. I'm not even joking.
"Treasure" by Bruno Mars
From Unorthodox Jukebox
Pop
Never ask me to listen to Bruno's first album with you. Ever. EVER. I can't stand it. Not even the singles. That's probably why I ended up enjoying a lot of tracks on his second release - he evolved and changed his sound. In this case, it work extremely well. It's catchy, it's fun, it's just overall a great pop song.
