They actually shouldn't. The US boycotting the Moscow Olympics in 1980 did absolutely nothing other than let the Soviet win more medals.

If anything, pro-gay countries SHOULD participate, while showing support for LGBT people worldwide.

Most pro-gay athletes (past and present) don't support the boycott.

Protest Putin and his anti-gay regime; not athletes that have been training for over a decade for this moment. In many sports, this one Games is the only time they'll be at their best to compete.

Its kind of surprising to see a celebrity say something smart and meaningful for once

I kind of agree with her because that is a huge boost to their economy but I don't think one country boycotting is going to do anything so it would only really effect them and make a statement if several countries pulled out of the Olympics to make a statement. But I can only imagine the uproar of athletes who have been working so hard for the Olympics to be told their not even participating for something they may or may not believe in and its not really constitutional to force that belief on everyone so it would probably create more problems than it would solve.

Don't the Olympics provide big boosts for the host country's economy, though? I think that's one of the big reasons countries boycott Olympics when they don't agree with the host country, because they don't want to contribute to an unjust government's prosperity.

I'm not sure where I stand on this issue, because I see your side of the argument too... but I'm leaning more towards supporting a boycott. If I were a gay Olympian, I don't think I'd feel comfortable competing there.

I hope she still tours Russia though (and not just because they've been supporting all her songs from ARTPOP so much ), because she's right: it's an important place to spread her message.

Also it would look a little stupid for the US to boycott for gay rights when we don't even give gays the right to marriage in a majority of states here. Its obviously not the same as physically abusing gays and the like but it still saying we can support you in another country but we don't openly support you in our country. Its being a little hypocritical.

I'm taking a population dynamics class my professor is gay and this happens to be an important thing going on in the world right now. Russia has the 9th highest population in the world putins little gripe with homosexuals for whatever reason is harmful . Japans population is the most rapidly declining population along with Italy i don't see them pursuing tirades against any minority group something is wrong.

I still think a bigger impact would be made if the US didn't show up to the olympics.

There would be headlines ALL OVER THE WORLD discussing the boycott. Not many saying "US showed up"

Agreed.

It's incredibly selfish to want all of our amazing athletes to not compete at the highest point in the sport, also one that only comes around every four years. When thinking ahead too, the 2018 Olympics are in South Korea, and I can almost guarantee conflict with that unless something changes drastically in the next years, I don't want to sit and watch someone who works that hard to just miss two Olympics.

This leaves a bad taste in my mouth for Lady Gaga.
