I don't agree with either of the poll options. I think that straight people should be allowed to criticize homophobic statements, but they shouldn't be allowed to tell a gay person what is and isn't homophobic. If a gay person is offended by something than its probably at least somewhat homophobic. Just because it doesn't offend all gay people doesn't mean its not homophobic.

Stop. You are the definition of overcompensation with no payoff.
Also, minorities dont get to earn respect. They have to demand it.

I live in NYC. I know people greet each other that way. I know people fight that way. But we're talking about people using derogatory words/words to describe a people to describe something else negative. Like you calling a bad outfit "Latino". It makes no sense and makes you sound like a damn 11 year old fool. It's the same thing with calling something negative gay. Like, are you a troll?

Same I haven't heard it since Freshman year nobody really says it anymore and it's already going out of fashion alongside "***"

The phrase "that's so gay" is homophobic because it compares gay people to something negative/ridiculous. Simple as that. It's sad some people are so blind to this.

GoodBYE. Now you're saying using stereotypes is fine for positive praise. And I have NEVER heard someone use the word in the way that you're suggesting.

You, as a straight person, cannot tell me, a gay person, what I can and can't be offended by when it comes down to homophobia. If you say, "Oh that **** is gay" when referring to something as stupid or dumb, I have a right to be offended, because I'm sick of my sexuality being the go-to insult for everything. It's offensive, period.
If a tv show, or something else in the word is stupid, just say it's stupid. Why do you have to say "Oh that's gay?" If it's stupid, it's stupid. If it's dumb, its dumb. "Gay" has nothing to do with those two, and to continue to use the word and associate it with something negative is problematic.
And if you continue to use that word in a negative context, purposely and knowingly, you have a problem and might want to take that up with yourself.

The fact that people think it's okay to say "that's so gay" is wrong, especially to young lgbt people, its perputates the stereotype that it's wrong to be gay, bi, lesbian etc

I hear "that's so gay" virtually everyday. You probably mustn't leave your house that often to claim you 'haven't heard it in years'.

Oh my god. You know what, I'm already done with this thread (well, you). I'd recommend everyone else quit too. You'd find more logical, intelligent discussion with a loaf of bread.

Sorry that I don't want to be a victim my whole life. You guys don't want real acceptance, you just want to get treated like a special snowflake so that nobody gets to tell you you're wrong. It's just frustrating knowing I can't be accepted as a gay human being because most gays are too busy getting their panties in a bunch over this nonsense rather than making real progress and changes for our community.

But even if it's intentionally derogatory, isn't it the receivers fault for being offended? That's what you said.

Amazing how close-minded you are and how incapable of reading
It's all up to what you choose as offensive and how to react to it.
