Bullying won't stop. They should focus on making kids stronger and helping them realize that what some idiots say about them in high school means nothing in the grand scheme of things and that 10, 15 years down the line they'll have forgotten it even happened.

Im a homosexual that isn't African American who lives in a New York project. I DO know. Suicides are going up because kids are getting softer. Bullying hasn't increased from the regular amount. There has always beein bullying. The only thing moving is suicide rate.

5 or 4 years for a 12 years old is not a little while, but it is still temporary.

Telling them they need to toughen up won't help the root of the problem, the bullying. Telling them to toughen up will likely make them feel worse and pathetic. It isn't the way to go about getting kids to be stronger.

Of course you can do both, but by toughening kids up, you're also preparing them to be able to deal with the real world, which is the whole point of school to begin with.
Should we focus on anti-bullying legislation? Is it even worth trying to stop something as endemic and ancient as bullying?
Should we discourage kids this young and living in such unwelcoming environments from coming out?
Do we teach LGBT tweens and teens how to defend themselves—thus perpetuating the cycle of violence?
Maybe consider our society's structural issues that lead to homophobia and xenophobia in the first place?

...Or media coverage of gay teens committing suicide is what's increasing. Since it was often swept under the rug (or nobody knew the kid was gay) in the past.
