Adele sings pop music influenced by soul. She also managed to cross racial barriers with RITD, which appeals to all types of music lovers - soul, rock, R&B, country etc. Name one song from JHUD that has that same widespread appeal... I'll wait.
19 is probably her most soulful sounding album and surprise surprise, it was her least successful.
I think just because people associate Adele with sophistication and she's on pop radio, they have a hard time realising her music is quite black sounding.
JHud doesn't really make great music from what I've heard. But there are other black Adeles out there that don't get recognition. Especially in the UK.
Is Adele really that heavily pushed, though? I know she has major backing but it didn't feel like the industry was out to make her a superstar. People just responded to the material.
Her treatment at the Grammys for one. I remember when LL Cool J was presenting he took a moment to "welcome her back" and have the audience celebrate that her throat surgery was successful. That was really odd to me.
It's true. Yeah she has pipes, but she isn't doing anything past or contemporary soul singers were/are doing.
But ya'll will remain PERCHED in her bandwagon and dismiss this.
And the example they were using the most was Jazmine Sullivan or whatever, they're just pressed that Adele won Best New Artist at the Grammys over her, back in 09.
Adele is successful because she writes ****ing amazing music that no other artist can touch. Lots of people have soulful voices, but Adele's song-writing capabilities are the key to her success, plus her lovable personality adds to the marketing.
how come michael jackson and whitney houston and diana ross are so big then? MJ is one of the biggest selling singers. just dont try it with the race card. theres countless of successful black singers. just STOP. if your fav is black and failing its because their music sucks or just doesn't connect to the general public.
the only thing that may have to do with it is that adele's music is more pop than RnB as budbud said.
MJ was huge because his music has world appeal. thats why mariah and janet just weren't as popular worldwide either. it reached a certain audience but didn't have mass appeal. sometimes its just not good enough.
