I don't think Tiziano has ever sold out, he's always done what he wants to do and has always built his career with integrity. For example, when his label asked him to get a fake girlfriend to silence the gay rumors, he shot them down. And he's never made an English album despite the label pressure.

My other faves have all sold out at some point though

She has only said that about her first album. But to be fair that was totally controlled by LA Reid. Had three successful singles WW and sold about 5 Million copies... but P!nk wasn't satisfied coz the music wasn't really 'her'
So she kind of did the opposite of selling out and took a huge risk; threatening to quit unless the label lets her make the kind of music she wants to.

I think the majority of artists all sellout to some extent- mainstream or not. Some people think underground bands/artists cant sellout but I've seen huge sellout unknown irrelevant flops doing what they think everyone will buy instead of something actually new or interesting.

Honey I think looking at the contrast between her first album and her last one, it's pretty clear Gaga was a sellout from the beginning and then tried to gain some respect by taking a direction that seemed more true to herself when she could afford to.

"selling out" is really a confusing thing to me though... It's kind of unfair that someone like Marina for example can't make an electropop record because that wasn't what she chose to do with her first album without being called a sell out, but people like Beyonce have been making radio friendly music from the beginning and they aren't "sell outs".

Marina started making music that she knew would make waves with the general public. That's selling out. It's not what she started off with but she went that direction to make some coin.

Absolutely. To work with a major label and reach a mainstream audience, you have to make concessions. It doesn't mean your fave's career is any less great, though, so don't get defensive.

I thought she said that she didn't like Try This too? That she just made the album centered around what the label wanted so that they would leave her alone or something.

Actually NO.
She didn't like the fact that the label wanted a M!ssundaztood 2.0 to ride off of the success of M!ss. So, to rebel, she went in a totally different direction and make an alternative/rock album. She wrote all the songs and the album is very much her. In fact, there's a track-by-track interview on YT where she tells you what each song is about. Her best album tbh

Why are some people here calling Bjork a sell out? Bjork doesn't make mainstream music, she's an innovator because she like created her own genre and image, she doesn't make pop music. Bjork makes the kind of music she loves to make instead of jumping into current trends.

I would say Ke$ha and Marina, but bar their debuts they only have one album?

Listening to Ke$ha's old demo's, you can tell she has stuck with the same white girl sass rap she's become known for. Bar Goodbye, she has yet to make a track that doesn't show or emulate what her music is today.

Marina quasi sold out. She made her music a lot more radio friendly but kept her lyrical content very similar and her messages still remain very tongue in cheeck.

Florence has yet to sell out, but she's selling more records than nearly everyone that dabbles in the alternative musical genre, which is surprising.

Gaga completely sold out, it's delusional to think otherwise. Musically, listening to her demos before "The Fame", you can easily tell that she drastically needed to revamp her image in order to gain mainstream success, and if she hadn't taken the easy road and made herself into a walking spectacle, she wouldn't have a tenth of the success she has now.
