Applause is about adorning different costumes for the praise of the audience. The storyline isn't as apparent, but it's still there. Nonetheless, music videos don't have to have a storyline - see: Unconditionally.

People didn't expect anything other than humour after the preview, and humour/camp can be good if done correctly (Hot N Cold, Last Friday Night), but this video is just poorly conceived and poorly made. That's the bottom line.

I would give this video a B.

Katy's videos are one of the few of the moment that consistently look super high budget. That being said, it doesn't automatically guarantee you to have a great video (example: Roar and Unconditionally). Most of the video is comprised of over art directed sequences that follow a loose Egyptian theme. They did a great job at stylizing it, yet I feel that there is a lack of taste that could have pushed this from cheesy to epic. It is like the difference between Jeremy Scott and Stella McCartney, if you know fashion). I enjoyed it for the visuals up to the part at the end when she climbed the pyramid, and the ending with the man as the dog was just ridiculous. It is a visual treat, but beyond that it's not going to be considered one of the great music videos, which is unfortunate considering what could be accomplished with the money spent.

As many Katy stans have stated, if you don't like this then it's most likely not your demographic. That seems like a weak way to respond to criticism. I am also not Frozen's target audience, but I really enjoyed the film. There are ways to appeal to a variety of demographics, or at the least make it so that other demographics aren't turned off.

At points it wasn't as cringe-worthy as I expected it might be from the early promo shots, but it seems like the label is really trying too hard to establish her as that Michael Jackson-esque video queen with the over-the-top themes, styling and whatnot. The thing is that when Michael did a lot of themed videos like this, they were more organic to the time in which they were made and were really well-executed. The unnecessary humor implemented in this and Roar just really take away from the songs and sometimes I think she'd benefit from being a little simpler with these concepts. Some of the shots were really nice (like the silver body paint stuff), but the humor and random sound effects (which I HATE in videos) just took away from the song.
