However, once you start making #1's, top 5's, top 10's, selling millions of singles/albums, and getting awarded on televised big time venues, then you are essentially a mainstream/commercial act.
Taylor Swift is signed to an indie label, but you would have a hard time convincing anyone that she's "indie".
