I don't remember exactly when it was when I was first introduced to David Bowie. All I remember is that the first song of his I listened to was "Under Pressure". The second was "Space Oddity". I was hooked. And as I delved further into Bowie's discog, I discovered a truly amazing musician--no, screw that, a truly amazing ARTIST working at the top of his craft for years and years. The man could do little wrong, and even when he DID do wrong, it was almost an admirable kind of wrong, like a "hey, at least you tried something different, you know?" kind of wrong. Even when he failed, David Bowie won.
This news about Bowie's passing has rocked me to my core. It's always rough to see someone you truly admire pass away, but with Bowie, it still feels different, like we're losing someone who, despite everything he gave to us, still felt like there was always more in the tank. Even as he neared death, Bowie continued to impress. "Lazarus" is truly an incredible song and an early candidate for song of the year. It's also even more poignant now, given the events of today.
Rest in peace, David Bowie. Icon, trendsetter, LEGEND until the very end.
