I'm sorry, but what controversy has Rihanna caused? All I can think of is Chris Brown. She hasn't done anything controversial, musically or socially.

I feel as though controversy and relatability of those two are what makes them so similar.
Go through Madge's archives, the same who hate Rihanna now would probably be the same who hated on Madonna back in the day. Rihanna just didn't come out the gate destroying the game and she doesn't have the sales, but in 20 years if Rihanna is still the highest selling singles artists the haters will fall in line.
But it will never be GaGa because she's never Stefanie. Rihanna and Madonna are themselves, not a character. But it's just my opinion.

Rihanna doesn't have anywhere near the amount of controversy Madonna had, and whatever she does get is usually for something silly and not at all artistic like her body or her relationship with Chris Brown.
She might have some controversy, but comparing that to an artist who danced before burning crosses in 1989 and who was threatened with ex-communication by the Vatican is insulting.

She has said in the past that she wants to be the black Madonna.

Rihanna's last four albums received acclaim, definitely more than Hard Candy or MDNA. Let's just be real here. Also, nothing about her singles are forgettable. The most forgettable one would probably be Pon De Replay, but other than that, no. People even still remember Unfaithful and it wasn't a #1 hit or anything. Her reinvention from A Girl Like Me to Good Girl Gone Bad alone ![Alexz](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ec20fb7f.gif) and she was the hottest person on the planet, especially at that time. I'm sorry if you can't see that, but the facts and evidence are there.

Also, Madonna flashes her backside and boobs onstage, its in the media. No other pop star today could get that same kind of treatment other than Rihanna. She gets a tattoo under her boobs, it makes headlines. Lady GaGa went topless for photo spreads and in some videos she's filmed, flashed her vagina in the Telephone music video, and the world still rotates as usual. You all may hate to admit that I'm right, but uh, I am so ![Alexz 2](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRL_Smilies_All/atrlers/alexz2_zps7d3bf068.gif)

![ahh](images/smilies/images/smilies/ahh.gif) But you're comparing an album that is 30 years into her career to an album that is 7 years into Rih's. And no, the only memorable Rihanna singles are Umbrella, DIsturbia, and maybe a few more here and there. Fan base saying "the GP loves it" =/= the general public loving/remembering it. And since when was TTT and Loud so "critically acclaimed"? ![too funny](images/smilies/images/smilies/priceless.gif) Madonna's hits collection alone has sold more than Rihanna's discography. ![rip](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/ATRLSmilies/rip_zpsec10ede9.gif)

Simply put, no. She's just a pop girl with lots of hits. She lacks the critical acclaim, success, ability to reinvent and many other factors that make Madonna Madonna.

No, Lady Gaga is (because of album and touring success).
Gaga's also a lot more intelligent, talented and conceptual, a lot like Madonna.
Though Gaga is still many miles away from the impact of '82 to '86 Madonna (her first four years).

Perfect answer from madonnas and a rational explanation from Fahrenheit. ![clap3](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v232/korn0818/67d90ee8.gif)

I always wonder if Rihanna knew that she was making a clever pun when she called herself the black Madonna. She's religious, right?

No.
Madonna is an artist, she writes her own music and controlled her career from Day 1.

![ahh](images/smilies/images/smilies/ahh.gif) In what world did Rihanna's tattoo get major headlines? And I'm pretty sure Telephone was more talked about than anything in Rihanna's career other than Chris Brown beating her ass. A pety tattoo now some how makes you the new Madonna?

If the general public didn't love it, I doubt she'd be as successful and have as many #1s as she does *checks receipts* and her 7 years is still more comparable than the 4 years of Lady GaGa and Katy Perry. Talk That Talk was called one of the dirtiest pop albums since albums like Madonna's own Erotica.
