To paraphrase what I said in the thread about her "classics," why shouldn't her legendary status be questioned by people who don't know her? Especially when said people know many others from her time. The issue is not that people don't know of "icons of yesteryear" after all, a large percentage of them are Whitney, Mariah, and Madonna lovers.
If they know Janet's peers, but don't know Janet, what does that suggest about Janet?
