060. Taylor Swift “Mine”
059. Katy Perry “Firework”
058. Avril Lavigne “Alice (Undergroud)”
057. Adam Lambert “If I Had You”
056. Kris Allen feat. Pat Monahan “The Truth”
Two female artist that had a great year make an appearance in this set. Taylor Swift, in particular, murdered the competition when it came to album sales with Speak Now. The lead single from that album was
'Mine', a very simple track with an ordinary melody, but what made the difference were Taylor's songwriting skills and her unique story telling talent. Katy Perry also had a great year, three number ones from the same album, including
'Firework', an inspirational track about self confidence. Yes, the lyrics are corny, but the build up the the hook is just insane, expect more Katy in the top 50. Ironically, the top 2 from season 8 of American Idol share this set also. Adam Lambert released an irresistible dance track ('If I Had You'), one of the standouts from his debut album; while Kris Allen did the exact opposite, released a ballad assisted by Train's frontman, who doesn't really add much to the song. Kris was not the best singer during his season, but the emotion he puts to
'The Truth'is what makes it so perfect. Finally, I have to admit I honestly adore Avril Lavigne in slow songs.
'Alice' had a dark mood around it that made it feel so different to anything she had done before. The way she narrates the story is entertaining and here voice sounds amazing. I'm definitely looking forward to her album debuting this year.
055. Black Eyed Peas “Imma Be”
054. Kanye West feat. Pusha T “Runaway”
053. Travie McCoy feat. Bruno Mars “Billionaire”
052. Diddy feat. Dirty Money “Loving You No More”
051. David Guetta feat. Rihanna “Who’s That Chick”
This is the last set mini set before the top 50, and it was extremely hard to leave this songs out of it. Gym Class Heroes lead singer Travie McCoy and new talent Bruno Mars delivered a great duet this year.
'Billionaire' has a fresh sound and the lyrics are clever, name dropping big celebrities like Oprah and Angelina Jolie. This song was almost an anthem this year.
'Imma Be' was the last offering from 'The E.N.D.', and it was a great ending to a great era. The best goes hard, Wil.I.Am surprisingly sounds the best here, I love his verse. In
Runaway, Kanye requests a toast for the assholes, but we might as well have a toast for the music genius himself. This song is brilliant from beginning to end, the piano intro is epic and Kanye handles the song like the pro he is. Diddy released about 4 or 5 singles before the release of his album, and
'Loving You No More' was the one that impacted me the most. The bridge provided by Dirty Money and Drake's guest rap verse are the best part of the song, Diddy is not too bad, but he gets outshined in his own song. Last but not least is the collaboration between David Guetta and pop diva Rihanna.
'Who's That Chick?' was like a drug to my ears for many weeks, the production is excellent and Rihanna's auto-tuned vocals put the song in a whole different level. It's funny how this was originally intended to be just for a Doritos campaign, what a waste of art it was gonna be.
