It's kind of ironic since the album cover is so colorful but Applause has been dark and Venus would probably would be dark too if we're going to look at the director's previous works.

But I think the video is going to be epic. The director's works is amazing!

Theres always been an element of "darkness" to Lady Gaga sans the videos for Eh Eh and probably Just Dance. Its just apart of her aesthetic and I hope she never loses that. However, I assume you're referring to the seriousness of the Fame perfume commercial or the Born This Way video and I kind of doubt she'll go that route with this not because its bad but because that was then and this is now. I feel like a lot of what was perceived as "dark" within the BTW-era originated from the fact that aesthetically the album and its artwork took some reference from 80s goth and metal which was obvious in the tour design and the Nick Knight photoshoots. This album doesn't have that kind of aesthetic so far really.
