The Giants and Pats are two of the most popular teams in the entire league.

The 49ers aren't popular at all and the Ravens are probably middle-of-the-line in terms of popularity (that will obviously rise now).

I think it's a combination of overall consumer behavior and the interest in the halftime show.

Yes the Giants and the Patriots are among the most popular, but the 49ers have a VERY dedicated fan base and is considered to be the most decorated team of the 1980s. Though the Ravens certainly aren't as popular as the Patriots or Giants, they actually have a top 10 market.

Not only that, this Superbowl had a story line with two brothers going head to head as coaches and it being Ray Lewis' last game. The average NFL fan doesn't care about the half-time show. They genuinely want to watch the game. The half-time show is just a bonus.

That said, these are not final ratings. IMO the poster got his ratings from the CBS Release about overnight ratings. Most of the numbers he posted matched the release.

This is live coast-to-coast number for an entire network no matter what the programming, so it is whatever is airing between 7-11. Last year this included The Voice which started at 10:19. It was all SuperBowl from 7-11 this year in most time zones (except the West of course).

Last year, NBC averaged a 32.0/64 adults 18-49 rating and 85.346 million viewers from 7-11PM before being adjusted to 111.3 million viewers in the final ratings. The delay from the power outage coupled with the late surge by the 49ers boosted CBS's 10-11PM average a lot versus last year when the Super Bowl ended much earlier and The Voice started at 10:19PM.

This year the average is 35.3/69 with 18-49 and 95.942 total viewers.

Further complicating numbers is that Nielsen has decided to toss out the power outage time.

It's really is insignificant and petty; however, I thought it should be noted that Superbowl ratings have been on an upward trend since 2005 despite the fact that some smaller markets have participated such as the Arizona Cardinals and the New Orleans Saints. Basically, it doesn't matter how big the market it, the Superbowl still attracts massive audiences.
