A #1 on rhythmic back then can get up to 80 million audience impressions, about double of what a #1 on that format can get now. Pretty sure if that panel wasn't so huge back then then maybe more rock-leaning songs like Boulevard of Broken Dreams could have stood a bigger shot at topping the Hot 100.

Those airplay numbers from 2002 till 2008 are not accurate at all. Rhythmic and Urban radio were not as popular as the industry thought they were. A no1 on Rhythmic radio could give you 80m! Today, not even 40!

In 2007-8 they changed the way they count radio ratings. They stopped using diaries at the top 50markets. They started using PPM, portable people meter. The PPM is a wearable portable device much like a pager or cell phone, that electronically gathers inaudible codes that identify the source of a broadcast, such as a radio station.

Pop music exploded! PPM showed that it was way more popular than what we thought. The Urban and Rhythmic formats collapsed. Their big popularity was a myth. The same has happened with extreme right wing talk radio like Rush Limbaugh etc...

Digital sales proved that too. Pop songs were selling way more. Some of the songs on that list with the higher audiences ever didn't even hit no1 on digital sales. We Belong Together never hit no1. It peaked at no2. Hollaback Girl was selling way more. If the charts were like in 99% of countries, only sales, We Belong Together would have been a no2 hit.

Hollaback Girl was the first song to sell 1m downloads. I'm sure it was a bigger single seller than WBT, but it doesn't really matter when WBT was making Mariah sell albums like crazy.
