The first two movies did almost exactly the same in the UK.
They had a great movie which fans around the world had been waiting for. The first two movies already did rather poorly in the US compared to worldwide so the outcome of the third was hardly a surprise (although the US result was realy awful).
Back to the topic of this thread:
I believe they had hoped for more in the US. These comedies tend to do not as well internationally so they must have hoped it would bring in much more in the US.
Thumb by thumb rule is that a movie needs to triple its production budget to break even. Had the movie done 100-120 million in the US (which is not unheard of for ensemble holiday movies) and another 40 million worldwide, they would have been financially safe and could have reaped BluRay/licensing.
Still, this is not "Anistons flop". It is an ensemble movie and there are some big names in the movie (US wise).
