It's pretty easy imo.
I love animals so much, but human life is more valuable than a dog in my opinion. "My dog" doesn't equal to someone's son or daughter, brother or sister, future father or mother, best friend etc.
I'd never let anyone suffer through the death of their son/sibling, let alone the loss of a loved one. I'm guessing the people who chose the dog over the child didn't go through the death of someone they knew closely.

The child, it would be in my natural instinct to save a human life.

In this case I would be able to jump back in and drag my dog out the water, though.

If say, my dog was attacking a child and I had to make a decision: I would honestly beat the **** out of my dog to unlock her jaws, if needs be.

In fact, when she was alive, and she attacked a smaller dog for stealing her stick, I did just that.

She was my responsibility and her behaviour and actions are accountable to me. I'd be in a lot of trouble otherwise.

Not surprised at the poll results though. Weird people.. I'm hoping you're just wrongly guessing your reaction..

No, I didn't. In the first part of my post, I asked why should I care about the kid. In the second part, I asked why the hypothetical dog owner should care about me if I was the kid.

Okay so out of interest I did some research.

It turns out that the dog would likely be able to survive under water longer than a human, if it has experience in water.

Babies, especially newborns have the natural instinct (similar to marine origins) to naturally hold their breath.

Theoretically, me jumping in, saving the child, then jumping in for my dog was the best option as the dog would survive also.

Nice to know y'all just thoughtfully allowed a child to die though!
