I've heard of that band but I've never listened to them.

it loses its initial excitement after a few spins, but it's still decent imo.

What a great concept album Electra Heart is

Electra Heart is the only Marina album I heard,
so I couldn't really compare to her previous works.
But I love the album. She still sounds unique, despite
joining mainstream grounds. I love her voice. She's
very talented.

Electra Heart. I agree on some of the songs being overproduced. Still, I find it musically a lot more exciting than The Family Jewels, which wasn't more than a "cute" album to me, the production lacked punch, compared to the lyrics. This time it worked out better. The persona, of course, made her come across as slightly pretentious, but she pulled it off well, nonetheless. Can't wait to see what she has in store next. I imagine her to try yet another new sound. Hopefully she gives up on trying to be "a pop star". Favs are Fear and Loathing, Radioactive, Teen Idle, Lies, The State of Dreaming and Buy the Stars.

that's true and one of the things I like most about the album, she still managed to maintain her uniqueness despite becoming more mainstream. it still doesn't sound like anyone else out there and very much like Marina, also because of her voice, which is really special.

you're right, the debut sounds kinda basic compared to this album (it's still an adorable album though). Electra Heart is more developed, more elaborate and the music seems to be more in sync with the poignant lyrics.
I'm also curious to see what she does next, maybe a mixture of both albums would be nice, the originality of the debut paired with the production and maturity of the second album. Fear and Loathing I remember when she first released the video, I immediately loved it, it's such a beautiful song and got me really excited for the new album. Buy The Stars is a gem, too.

I absolutely love Electra Heart But you are right, this whole Electra Heart persona thing just makes it seem more distant than it feels/than it should be. Nonetheless I adore this album... Valley Of The Dolls Especially the "racing down into oblivion"-part always gets me. And Teen Idle is just... well, great, but also very depressing.

it does, she really overdid it a little. but I feel the same, it doesn't take away from how much I love it. VOTD is so underrated, it gets paid dust so much, I don't understand, it's so beautifully haunting Teen Idle is depressing, but I can relate so much to it

TOP ALBUMS OF 2o12
THE TOP 1o
#o6 ELLIE GOULDING
Halcyon
I'd been awaiting Ellie's second album for a long time, curiously anticipating what she had in store, and I'm still amazed about the result to this day. she's grown so much and progressed into a very interesting direction, I think the electronic sound suits her very well. she used it in a great way, combining it with instruments like harps and especially her angelic voice, making her sound edgier and showing that she has found her own style.
it's a very personal record, dealing with a break-up, and I love how she expresses her feelings in the lyrics; they're dark and morbid but sound so beautiful and poetic at the same time. sadly, I feel like the album is strongest in the beginning and loses some of its magic the further it progresses, tempting you to skip the tracks towards the end or just zone out. but when you have an album that's on such a high level, not every song can be a smash, and although there are some flaws, I still wouldn't call these songs fillers. they're still pretty good, with nice melodies and arrangements. they're just lacking a certain something - but they help make the album the cohesive masterpiece that it is.
favorite tracks My Blood. Only You. Figure 8. |
#o5 ARCHITECTS
Daybreaker
this album hits hard, musically and lyrically. it's angry, it's honest, it's freaking brutal. while they seemingly had toned down the aggressiveness on their previous record, it's back now, with heavy guitars and drums that create an epic wall of sound. the melodic elements still exist though, and that's what makes this album truly great - its balance between soft and hard, also expressed through the amazing interplay of screaming and clean vocals, courtesy of their frontman who switches seamlessly between both vocal techniques. he has a beautiful singing voice and it never gets drowned out by the music, showing the band's talent and how technically well-crafted their songs are.
for the first time, they incorporated socio-political themes into their lyrics, being influenced by such topics as religion, the London riots and capitalism. depending on whether you agree with them or not, that can either be quite controversial or comforting, but no matter how you feel about their opinions, they're definitely capturing and make you think. I like when music does that, when it fulfills a purpose other than pure entertainment.
favorite tracks Alpha Omega. Devil's Island.

From the previous set:
Electra Heart I loved Silversun Pickups' previous album, but I was a little bit disappointed with the first single from this new one and I didn't listen to it in full, maybe I should
Halcyon is really good

Agree with your comment on Ellie's album, maybe that's why I still haven't listened to the whole album.
I was listening to it track by track in Youtube and by track 8-9 I got tired of it. Maybe I should re listen someday.
