Syria, though not itself an important oil producer, is a pivotal state for the worlds most important energy region because many significant oil and gas pipeline routes which are necessary for global trade and economy meet in and go through Syria.
US are presenting Assads regime as the evil one. But in reality there is no good or evil side, war in Syria is a tragedy with both sides committing terrible atrocities. Russia and Iran are deeply invested in Assad regime, while USA and Israel support the rebels (Free Syrian Army - islamic extremists who are responsible for example for Aleppo blockade of food, starving thousands of civilians there)
Destroying the Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah alliance has long been a key American goal. To weaken or even turn one of its members into a Western ally would be a huge victory for the USA and a major loss for Russia, Iran, Hezbollah, and even China. They will never allow it to happen without fighting.
This will not be about Syria. In fact, this conflict will involve worlds greatest superpowers.
The situation can easily escalate into wider conflict, especially because Syria has allies who posses huge arsenal of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and you cant predict what they will do. You cant also predict what the islamic extremists who want to destroy Assads regime and support USA in this conflict will do. Its very dangerous.
