How is BTW not commercial? Just because she didn't work with RedOne as much or didn't follow the Katy format, doesn't mean that the album isn't commercial. "Born This Way," "Judas," "The Edge of Glory," "ScheiBe," "You & I" and a few other songs are still very commercial. They're not on some Arcade Fire/Bjork-type stuff.

Some of the songs have commercial sounds, but the content is not.

again, they have the commercial sounds, but the content is not. End of story.
Would you expect to scream "I'll be strong without the SCHEISSE yeah !" in a club while you don't even understand what the word means, and the song is about female empowerment.

commercial is being something everyone can relate to, not polarizing like some of the songs on the album.
If you wanna treat BTW like a commercial album, i don't give a damn.

Well, then it's commercial if the sound is commercial, no? If one aspect of the song is something, then that makes it so.
"Single Ladies" is a female empowerment song. It's still commercial.
The content may be different from what her peers is talking about, but the song is not totally noncommercial. Of course those songs are not as radio-friendly as "Poker Face" or "Bad Romance" because those songs rely on strong hooks, but those songs on BTW aren't that different from what's been popular for 5 years now. The content is just a bit more out there compared to her peers.

So, "everyone" can "relate" to songs like "Poker Face," "Alejandro," and "Telephone?"
Think about what you're saying. I think some of you are trying to find ANY reason for BTW losing momentum. If you want to discuss lyrical content, then let's discuss that. Let's not make BTW into some alternative CD or neo-soul CD. You're not talking about a Bjork CD or Erykah Badu CD. This album is a bit more "out there" than her last two releases, but it's not totally noncommercial.

since when we're finding reason for BTW losing momentum ?
It is not even losing drastically okay ?
The sales are front-loaded, what you're expecting ?
even TF was losing momentum but TFM rejuvenate the era.
I'm not arguing on the reason BTW is losing momentum, i'm arguing most of you think that BTW's songs are commercial enough.
Since when only alternative and neo-soul are non-commercial ?
I would even go to the extent that some songs on "4" are not commercial enough.
They just don't sound like something people wil like nowadays with Electro pop and dance-pop taking the lead.

Teenage Dream is extremely commercial and radio-friendly.
I agree with ToY and to some extent TOTGA.

BTW has both commercial and non-commercial songs. I would say that BTW (the song), TEOG, MTN, Hair and maybe Scheisse are the only 'commercial' songs on the record. The rest are definitely not.

I didn't say only alternative or neo-soul were non-commercial. Those are two genres that have never been huge or meant for commercial purposes.
And 4 has some commercial appeal on it. According to you, commercial is anything that everyone can relate to, but I'm pretty sure "Countdown," "I Care," "Party," "Best Thing I Never Had" and other songs on that album would fall under "commercial," no? All of those songs, sans maybe "Run The World," is commercial. My argument is that BTW is not completely noncommercial. Even you said that the sound is commercial. Different from what your peers are doing doesn't make it noncommercial.

Commercial and generic are two different things in my book.
Katy, Kesha, Britney, and Rihanna make generic music. They make songs that are designed to hit #1 on Billboard. Usually the design consists of whatever is popular at the moment. Generic artists use hit machine producers as well, such as Dr. Luke/Max Martin/Stargate/David Guetta...you know the producers behind all the hits you hear today.
Who else is releasing hits with Fernando/DJWS? Not many. Is anyone at all, actually? Born This Way certainly was not designed to have strings of Billboard #1s.
Obviously, Born This Way is not some indie pop-record. Lady Gaga is not Imogen Heap or Regina Specter. I would say the album does offer commercial appeal with songs like The Edge of Glory and Scheisse, but like I said that doesn't mean generic. Commercial, to me, just means easy for the casual top 40 listener to get into. Generic means it is the same as everything else.

perhaps our view on the term "commercial" are not the same.
I will still reiterate that BTW really has some commercial sounds, but most of them have noncommercial content and some of them are not commercial at all.

I realize she's not putting out Bjork-type music. When I say it's not commercial, I'm talking in the context of her debut and in the context of what is put out by huge popstars. The look, music, lyrics, producers & themes of the era are not commercial in the context of (1) her breakout (Just Dance), which was #1 just 2 years ago and (2) in the context of what other big popstars like Katy, Ke$ha, Britney are doing.
If LMFAO's next album is about gay rights, immigration, religion, death, feminism, politics, if they change their entire party animal aesthetic, and if half of the songs aren't even pure pop anymore, I will consider it a hugely risky move commercially, even if there are some big choruses to be found on the album.
You can always assume that when I talk about someone like Gaga, I am comparing her to her pervious self and to her peers, not to indie bands.

To end it, almost EVERY album out there IS commercial. Aren't albums made to sell? Or the label wants to make it flop? Maybe we should change terms. Generic?
