There are 5 roles, Top, Mid, Bot, Support and Jungle. 3 Lanes: Top, mid, bottom. You fight the enemy team, kill enemy minions and push down enemy turrets (3 turrets in each lane) until you can destroy an inhibitor. Super-empowered minions spawn in the lane of the inhibitor you take. You basically push lanes until you reach the enemy nexus. It's guarded by 2 turrets, if you destroy both turrets you can attack the nexus. Destroy the nexus and you win the game.
You start with 500 gold to buy starting items, a trinket item and 2 summoner spells that you pick before the game starts. Most of the map is hidden by fog of war except your lanes.
Objectives include: Dragon (which gives bonuses for each consecutive Dragon your team kills), Baron Nashor: Baron spawns at 20 minutes into the game and it gives your entire team a strong buff. If you're near ally minions while you have a Baron buff it empowers them. Rift Herald is a new objective that is basically a mini version of Baron that you can kill pre-20 minute mark. It drops a single-person buff that basically acts similar to a Baron buff. And there are all sorts of jungle camps that do different little things if you're the Jungler and smite them.
That's just the basics.
