If anyone is confused as to what will happen if they're still tied after stoppage time (the extra time added after 90 minutes):
Quote:
So you're watching the United States play Belgium in the World Cup this afternoon and after 90 minutes and some stoppage time the game is still tied.
What happens now?
In the group stage, the game could end in a tie, but in the knockout stage the teams keep playing.
(Note: In the U.S. we call this overtime, but if you want to impress your friends with your soccer knowledge, please call this extra time.)
The teams will play 30 minutes of extra time, divided into two halves of 15 minutes. Just like in a regular game, stoppage time can be added after each half and the teams will switch ends after the first 15 minutes.
This is not sudden death (no Golden Goals). Even if a team scores, all 30 minutes are played in extra time.
If there are no goals in extra time, the teams go to penalty kicks (think shootout in hockey).
Penalty kicks are best of five. If it's still tied after that, the penalty kicks keep going until one team scores and one team misses in the same round.
