Is it just me or does this seem like a publicity move to try to get the public on Justin's side in the long run?

Nah I think there's a difference. The public REALLY hates him. Britney's situation was due to mental illness and was more of a train wreck that you couldn't look away from. Justin is completely in control of his actions and I don't believe the GP will root for him like they did for Brit.
