But the fact is though, her relevancy is clearly coming to an end. No one can continue to do what she does. Eventually it will come to a point where she will have to take some control. Whether its actually having some say in her career - or deciding to do interviews, or hug her fans, something will have to change.
Her album sales have decreased by half - and her digital sales are weak.
She could get back up - but she would have to actually work hard.
It just puzzles me why Britney's trend hopping always pays off.
I'm sorry, but this comment puzzles me. Her trend hopping always pays off? Other than Femme Fatale, what era of hers can even be argued as "trend hopping"? For the majority of her career, she set the ****ing trends. Before the breakdown, she was the definition of American pop music.
I honestly think that this article sums it up perfectly:
Quote:
"Britney Spears: The Origin Of The Super-Pop Species"
"By the time you read this, Britney Spears will have scored her sixth #1 debut with Femme Fatale, her latest installment of supersonic, stealth-fighter pop, a collection of songs equipped with laser-guided, heat-seeking hit missiles. In fact, Femme Fatale is more like an F-22 Raptor than an album.
Maybe I shouldn't be amazed that Brit finds herself atop the charts once again, but don't we live in austere times? Aren't Odd Future the only thing that matters these days?
I'm only sort of kidding. Because, frankly, each and every time Britney lands another #1, it's kind of like we've traveled through a wormhole and ended up in 1999, a time when the industry was still flush with cash and Lou Pearlman still lumbered the land. This was only 12 years ago, but it may as well have been 12 million.
These days, we still have plenty of pure pop stars, though none of them are quite like Britney. Lady Gaga is into performance art. Katy Perry is the California Gurl. Pink is the punky older cousin with a ton of tattoos. As is often the case with evolution, they have each developed specialized traits in order to survive. Britney is, in a lot of ways, the origin of the species (for simplicity's sake, I'm just ignoring Madonna, who basically did everything before any of this generation's stars were even teething). She was — and, I suppose, still is — the music industry's first attempt to promote a star that is everything to everyone. And each and every time she surfaces with a new album in tow, it signals the return of pop's Mesozoic era. For all intents and purposes, she may spend her time between albums trapped in amber, waiting to have her DNA extracted by some scientist.
This is by no means meant to come across as a slight against Spears. It's fully understandable why her fans love her the way they do, not to mention the fact that Femme Fatale is a heck of a pop record, a starry shadowbox of the coolest sounds you're likely to hear all year. It's more simply marveling at the way she operates — in the cockpit of a high-powered fighter, making glossy, big-budget videos, putting on full-scale pop spectacles. There truly, honestly isn't anyone else like her.
We should take this opportunity to appreciate what Britney Spears — and her album — represent. She is the last super-pop star left standing. There was a time when everyone did things this way; now it's her and her alone. Spears is still everything to everyone, in a time when all we hear about are "niche markets" and "splintered genres," and for that alone, the success of Femme Fatale is noteworthy. Can she continue to survive among her more specialized peers? She's certainly earned the right to, though one gets the feeling she's probably not too worried about that fact. The thing about being the first is that there isn't really anything — or anyone — to compete against. So let others sweat the small stuff; Britney's only concerned with being Britney. Now and forever."
Because she's built as a performer. She gave us too much before now that she needs our support we give her back everything. Let's face it she's very hardworking during her peak and more hardworking that Gaga, Rihanna and Katy combined before. She's always gives creative input to her singles, albums, music videos. tours everything. She is really focused before.. Now she lost some steam but you know she still gives us great music so that's enough and I think those haters of her that were saying she's not ever making a comeback after her meltdown became fans after she came back from 0 to 100 and shocked every person who doubted her. Everybody though she was through then but she came back. Better than ever. And right now she's just enjoying every recognition she gets. She's a legacy already she doesn't need to prove anything and has a very loyal fanbase all over the world.
She built a fanbase that obviously doesn't care if she isn't a perfect artist. No matter if her albums stop selling, her fans will be buying tickets to see her, and as long as she has that, her career is not coming to an end...and haters will deal.
I get what LEM was trying to do, but it came off extremely pressed tbh, you could've just kept it in the Femme fatale thread.
Anyway, she's relevant because of her music, what other answer can i give you? That and her legacy is keeping her relevant, if a new artist performed like britney did in those promo performances, let's face it, noone would really want to buy their music or support them. I HATE the fact that she said that she doesn't have anything to prove. When she really does. I lalready explained why in the FF thread when she said it, anyone who disagrees is delusional. She's become kind of a joke this era to the general public and even to some of her peers, i mean lip syncing ttwe at the bmas and those promo performances were terrible. (i cant believe some stans are still trying to tell me otherwise)
IMO she performs pretty good on tour, but because her ass doesn't want to get up a promote/perform like artists are supposed to all they'll remember is her looking like a bloated mess at gma and jimmy kimmel.
And i KNOW she can dance better than what she's doing now on tour. All the she's 30 now, she broke her knee and she's a mother now excuses are ridiculous and i'm not here for them. We saw what she did in those two leaked rehearsals AFTER her breakdown, AFTER she broke her knee and AFTER she became a mother. She's just not determined enough, and it's frustrating sometimes.
However, i will say though that whether she's stiff or not she always puts on a good show, and you can tell she generally does love performing for her fans.
she is the biggest pop star of the last decade. She made her own business built around her success as an artist and has stayed true to herself over the last decade, instead of following trends and desperately trying to reinvent herself with every album she focused on good music and amazing videos.
She is the biggest artst since PrinceMadonna Michael Jackson and doesnt belong in the same sentence as most of the current gurls
1. The world has grown up with her. We've seen her evolve, change, mature, make mistakes, find love, lose love... It's the way Disney attempts to market all their recent stars, but fails at. That kind of "13 year bond" with people cannot be payed for or forged in a studio, it is developed through a constant presence throughout someone's life.
2. Her Personality. Humbleness & respect will take you far in this business - & that is something Britney is known for within the industry. She was that little, naive, sweet southern girl.
But admittedly, the public now have this false impression of who Britney is as a person, & it's largely due to the type of music she puts out. She was known for her organic & relatable qualities, but after her breakdown those qualities where wiped from the public's mind. If she had come out with something more personal than "Gimme More" or actually faced her problems & expressed them through music (a la Everytime), as opposed to putting out sex-crazed tracks, she would be a lot more respected today. And the sad thing is, she did attempt to, through Original Doll & many Blackout era Demo's - but her label did all they could to crush those projects. Now she's largely known as cold, robotic & talentless, maybe they should let her grow up. Her music no longer feels genuine. She doesn't party, She doesn't drink. She doesn't "call the shots" or run anything. Quite the opposite.
4. Her mental state / conservatorship. People are invested in knowing what's going on with her. She seems to be shrouded in mystery.
3. People root for the underdog. Her breakdown actually helped keep her relevant. Americans love a tragedy story. They enjoy building people up, only to watch them fall. It's sick, but it's what the world is like. The "comeback" & "For The Record" inspired people & helped restore some of that sympathy. The entire Circus era was riding on the Sympathy wave, "Root for the underdog" wave. Without that personal connection or backing from the fans or the public, nobody would have given Britney's performances a second glance.
4. Her music keeps her relevant, the fact that she works with top-notch producers.
5. Her PAST. In a nutshell, Britney is still relevant because of her past achievements. See: MTV Video Vanguard Award.
6. The constant Media reports on her. Motherhood kept her relevant... We all know what sort of women buy those cheap-ass tabloids wanting to tear down someone's parenting skills in order to feel better about their own.
She remains relevant because anything she does, crap or not, is sensationalized by both fans and the media.
7. Her loyal, dedicated, crazy fan-base.
8. It's Britney bitch.
What did NOT help to keep Britney relevant:
Her performances post-08. The VMA's 2007 was her final truly "iconic" performance. She's been riding that wave ever since.
Britney has just always been a figure that has truly represented the stereotypical idea of what people perceive a pop star to be. She is a definer of pop culture. Is she the most talented, most beautiful or most credible artist? Not quite. However, it is what she has always stood for which makes her still very relevant today!
Lady GaGa: "I'm not gonna waste your time watching some bitch lip-sync! Britney Stans: "She's talking about Britney!!!"
will.i.am: "It's so dumb when people tweet for other people. Britney Stans: "He's talking about Britney!!!"
Someone:She is just pure **** and so stiff. Britney Stans: "They're talking about Britney!!!"
It's sad when Britney stans think their own favorite is talent-less. Another artist or person has a vague reference to SOMEONE (more than likely, NOT Britney related)...and they automatically think it's Britney related because they equate her with "talentless"
