Throughout her set Friday night, Kid Sister urged the crowd to “make some noise.” The Chicago emcee, dressed like a flapper from the Cotton Club with bobbed blonde-and-black hair, said her lackluster performance was due to a case of bronchitis. She had the remedy for both her and the crowd at the Rose Center of Earth and Science at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
In the surprises of all surprises, Kanye West took the stage to perform his verse on Kid Sister’s “Pro Nails.” The crowd erupted in disbelief. People began to climb the exhibits in the Cullman Hall of the Universe to get a better look at what they were seeing.
But sure enough, there he was onstage in a fur coat and all his glory. In his first performance - in New York at least - since his European tour, Kanye West got the crowd to do what Kid Sister couldn’t. He got them to make noise.
After “
Pro Nails,” Kid Sister left the stage to Kanye. He started his mini-set with a performance of “
Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” which sent the crowd into frenzy.
People rushed to the front of the stage. They pushed, pulled and wriggled for a better position. Although security had escorted them down, even more people began to climb exhibits. Those on the spiraling walk-way above the stage peered down in amazement.
Since the passing of his mother, Dr. Donda West, in November, West had been relatively quiet and out of the American public eye. Earlier this month, however, he posted an entry on his blog, KanyeUniverseCity.com. In the entry, he thanked everyone for their support and talk about the therapeutic qualities of Connect Four. He said the game helped him to zone-out while on tour in Europe.
But he was back onstage Friday. He was cheered and mobbed by the flicker of cameras and cell phones. Naturally, he went into a performance of “
Flashing Lights.”
When the chords from Flashing Lights started, the crowd erupted. “Yeah, this my favorite song right now too,” West said.
He apologized for the delays of the song’s video, but no one cared. Half probably could not hear him, while the other half was stuck in the moment.
After his performance of “Lights,” he asked the crowd to make some noise for Kid Sister and the Cool Kids. The Cool Kids opened the show to favorable reception, but their fun, boastful rhymes were outdone to West’s bravado.
He – and the crowd - ended his set with a performance of “
The Good Life” and “
Stronger.” In a virtual sing-along, they spit his lyrics right back at him onstage. His set lasted no more than 15 minutes, but the smiles and sweat on everyone’s face showed they enjoyed every minute.
