Somehow I feel like Hold It Against Me is her most forgotten lead single That trend was about to happen anyways, she was lucky to be the first one to release it because her label wanted it to be out as soon as possible.
Yes and no...I mean, what do you mean by 'started the trend'?
Among pop fans, and maybe the mainstream audience as a whole,it definitely increased it's popularity. But no,it didn't initiate the trend of incorporating dubstep in their songs among pop artists. That was already happening before and as dubstep was gaining popularity, ofcourse pop artists/their teams who keep themselves up to date with the dynamic conditions of music market would have started using it anyways.
So,it helped dubstep gain popularity among pop fans, but to say that it 'started the trend' is wording it in a completely wrong way/plain exaggeration.
It's obvious she popularized it and brought it to the mainstream. You can say someone else could have all day long, doesn't change the fact that she did it.
The influence of dubstep on more commercial or popular genres can be identified as far back as 2007, with artists such as Britney Spears using dubstep sounds; critics observed a dubstep influence in the song "Freakshow", from the 2007 album Blackout, which Tom Ewing described as "built around the 'wobbler' effect that's a genre standby."[67][68] Benga and Coki's single "Night" still continued to be a popular track on the UK dance chart more than a year after its release in late 2007, still ranking in the top five at the start of April 2008 on Pete Tong's BBC Radio 1 dance chart list.
