This is what cuts deepest about all of this for me.
To this day, I can't sing but a lick of the Korean phrases in their songs, but that seems to be a testament to how great they were?
The Singles Jukebox put me on with their glowing reviews of "IATB" and then followed that up with "Ugly" praise so I credit them with putting me on. By 2012, I was near stanning for them, purchasing most of the singles stretch between the second mini and
CRUSH.
When they came to Prudential Center in 2012, I was broke as a joke so I missed the show! But their success had me checking out all their peers and competitors so I became a casual VIP and f(x) fan. My love for those acts grew, but no K-act was ever seeing 2NE1 in my eyes.
Definitely bought
CRUSH the day of, and cheered on every halfassed attempt to properly crossover to the American market. I was even in attendance for the first CL show of her tour, humming along as best I could to every 2NE1 classic.
...
Pink Tape and
REBOOT may be better front-to-back listens, but 2NE1 will always reign as the best GG. As a collective, individually and as K-Pop ambassadors that made their stamp without a meme of a viral video, their run was a sight to behold.
Best of luck to the girls - ESPECIALLY CL.
P.S. Taeyeon has an MJ nose and BLACKPINK is never doing it xo
