Sylveon (Fairy) is quite strong
Charizard (Fire/Flying) useful for 3rd, 4th and 8th Gym
Honedge (Ghost/Steel) useful for 6th and 7th Gym
Hawlucha (Fighting/Flying) is good too and should take care of Team Flare members (just watch out for Electrike) as well as 4th and 8th Gym

I think after you changed you hair style several times you can unlock new ones

In Coumarine City. There is a fisherman by the boats. You can't use fly until after you beat the gym, though.
