Welcome to Josh's Best of 2014!
For the 2nd straight year, sorry for the crappy banner. Been very busy.
135-121
 | 135. The Veronicas - You Ruin Me (6 Weeks/Peak:07) | [28-21-17-14-12-7-xx] | (1 of 1)
I've loved The Veronicas ever since Untouched and I was so happy to hear that they came back this year. You Ruin Me is a beautiful ballad and it really had me hooked when it was released, but slowly, it burned out on me. I haven't heard the album yet but I'm hoping it would still slay. | | 134. One Direction - You And I (7 Weeks/Peak:07) | [21-15-12-8-9-7-20-31] | (3 of 4)
You And I was one of my favorite tracks off Midnight Memories. It was one of their finest ballads and a great gem in the album. Shame, it should've stayed that way. I loved it when it was a non-single but when it got released, I got so disappointed that I began disliking it. The video was cute tho but I hoped they went with another direction with their singles. | | 133. Carrie Underwood - Something In The Water (6 Weeks/Peak:06) | [33-26-20-16-13-11-6-xx] | (1 of 1)
It's amazing how Carrie got this far. She's definitely one of the few successful and deserving Idol winners. SITW really had me at first listen but it kinda lost touch after I overplayed it. I only have myself to blame. But I'm hoping it can still make it next year. | | 132. Sam Smith - Leave Your Lover (---/---) | (2 of 5)
Sam Smith is probably the king of heartfelt ballads. This one is one of the best. I mean how he can put up so much emotion and passion in his songs and deliver it awesomely is beyond me. Shame, if only I knew that a video for this existed I would've let it chart and slay! | | 131. Lady Gaga - Do What U Want (3 Weeks/Peak:24) | (2013: Almost) | [25-24-28] | (1 of 1 for both)
IMO, if Gaga's team had managed this song properly and released a DECENT video, the ARTPOP era would be completely different as it is now. This is probably one of her best songs and the first I've truly liked from her in a long time. | | 130. Lorde - Yellow Flicker Beat (4 Weeks/Peak:11) | [39-36-28-24-18-11-xx] | (2 of 3)
I'm still indecisive whether this or Team is my favorite Lorde song but it's a pretty close race. This was just love at first listen. It fits the movie pretty well and I really love every part of it, even the hums, especially the hums! This will DEFINITELY be in next year's yearend. | | 129. Gwen Stefani - Baby Don't Lie (5 Weeks/Peak:15) | [25-21-19-15-15-xx] | (1 of 1)
I had high hopes for this comeback. Especially since I loved her tons more with her The Voice stint. But omg did this comeback flop. Baby Don't Lie is a good song but with almost everyone pretty eager to hear her once again after a long time, this is just not the song you need. | | 128. Hedley - Crazy For You (6 Weeks/Peak:17) | [32-23-26-20-17-19-26-33]|(1 of 1)
This one is just so damn catchy! It's such a feel good song that keeps me grooving and moving every single time. And the video is good too. | | 127. Gavin DeGraw - Make A Move (4 Weeks/Peak:23) | [31-23-27-28-29-32-31-32-37] | (2 of 2)
This is probably one of my favorite love songs for the year, and when I say love song, I mean songs about simply being in love and nothing else because that feeling is pretty evident in this one. Gavin feels so in love in this song and it's pretty infectious if you ask me. | | 126. All Time Low - The Irony of Choking on a Lifesaver (6 Weeks/Peak:18) | [28-21-20-18-21-27-32] | (1 of 1)
All Time Low needs to release a new album ASAP because I really miss them. I loved this song ever since but I didn't see the need to release it. We need fresh new songs, not a new single! | | 125. Pitbull f/ Ke$ha - Timber (6 Weeks/Peak:11) | [11-11-11-11-18-27-40] | (Pit: 2 of 2, K$: 1 of 1)
4 Weeks at #11 Poor Timber. But this song was, and always will be, just a guilty pleasure anyway. | | 124. Oh Honey - Be Okay (6 Weeks/Peak:16) | [29-18-16-16-19-25-32] | (1 of 1)
I first heard this song from Glee and I thought it was an old song they covered that's why I didn't bother. But then I saw them in potent's countdown and I just knew i had to let them chart, and I'm glad I did because they deserved to be recognized. This song is just so cute in so many levels and their other songs are as well so better check them out. | | 123. Eminem f/ Rihanna - The Monster (5 Weeks/Peak:03) | (2013: #111) | [3-3-7-13-20-36] | (Em: 3 of 4, Rih: 1 of 1)
Rihanna's only entry this year. I used to really love this song but it got old after a while. It's nowhere near as good as LTWYL and is probably the most forgettable Billboard #1 this year. Still, it brought Eminem back to the top so there's that. | | 122. Kiesza - Hideaway (4 Weeks/Peak:23) | [34-30-29-23-28-31] | (1 of 1)
This song and its video are just so simple but that's what makes them so special. Kiesza just has this quality that makes her standout even without trying so hard. Hideaway is such a beautiful song but I'm so sad that it could only go as far up as here. | | 121. Hardwell f/ Matthew Koma - Dare You (---/---) | (Hardwell: 1 of 1, Matt: 1 of 2)
It was a hard time picking between this and some other songs that will be axed next as to who will be the one to miss out on the top 120. But after a while I decided to choose this just because it had the least successful chart run, which was never. I don't even know why I didn't give this song a chance to chart because it's just sooooo good. Everything Matthew Koma released this year were good and this one is no exception. I hope to hear more! |

The winners are...
 | FAVORITE GROUP
THE 1975
TRINITY: Chocolate, Girls, Robbers
I've never heard of this band until I saw their song Chocolate hit #1 in someone's Best of 2013 and I figured that I should give them a try. And I'm so glad I did because what happened after that was just amazing. Their whole album is just so unique and different from the normal sounds of their genre and like I said before, even though you may not understand anything Matthew is trying to say at first, when you finally do, you'd just be amazed as to how lyrically brilliant they are as well. I'm expecting great things from this band! Here's to a better 2015! PS: Sorry to Ross and Adam who got left out in the picture.
Runners-Up: Maroon 5 and OneRepublic |
 | FAVORITE NEW ARTIST
5 SECONDS OF SUMMER
TRINITY: Amnesia, Everything I Didn't Say, Heartbreak Girl
This was a close battle but I just had to give the award to this group. They're technically not new to me because I've heard Heartbreak Girl last year and it ended up at #48 in last year's chart. But I still gave them this chance this year because 2014 was undoubtedly their year. They finally had success in the US and are finally getting recognized in ATRL. I'm definitely excited to see what they have in store for us in the coming years because they will (hopefully) go far.
Runners-Up: Sam Smith and The 1975 |
