The key to make it far at Country is respecting the tradition. Sure you can mix other genres, but you HAVE to stick to your Country roots. Try them, they will leave your bandwagon immediately. They are one not to kid at.
How Taylor could make it for at least 20++, is by sticking to Alternative/Rock/Country. You know Country took the back seat when it comes to loyalty of the fans to Rock. Look at LedZep for example. With Country/Folk/Bluegrass/Americana/Roots/Alt.Country, respect the tradition, then it's guaranteed that they will stick to you through ups & downs. While at the Alternative, as long as you make GREAT music, you will keep selling.
