From the discussions I've seen on non-pop forums, it wasn't the message, but her loss of her "music edge." I feel like she could definitely stuff her music full of messages if it were a bit more radio-friendly than BTW is/was.
For example, I'll forever hold that Scheisse has an excellent message while being radio friendly as heck (sans the 40 second intro).
