Oh and I think some parts of the video act as a juxtaposition to the lyrics, which is really powerful. While she is shown stronger, the fact that she actually changes her appearance and life show that indeed a part of her has been taken by her husband. The face paint at the end symbolizes that, while she has become stronger to get through her heartbreak, she's going to have to change or even put on a "disguise" (aka hiding her real emotions) in order to truly move on.

The video does not fit the song. It wasn't bad, but pretty disappointing.

No, Friday is memorable. But let's stay on topic.

The video was boring and repetitive.
I didn't think it was realistic how she saw one sign that said join the Marines then immediately joined the marines. I also didn't like the bathroom transformation.
Cheesy.

I've never heard of someone feeling so worthless after being cheated on that they go and alter their entire life course by dropping whatever job/school(??) they may have to join the military. Katy is ostensibly an adult, not a teen, in this video... look at her professional ex-boyfriend at the beginning. So it makes even less sense in that context.

I mean, some people go as far as to commit suicide over that.
For me, the problem is that it's done in rushed, crude fashion. One second she's buying/plugging Arizona iced tea, the next she's attacking her hair with scissors and taping down her breasts. The transition from returning the ring to joining the army is ROUGH. And I know it's just a music video and they only have 4 minutes to tell their story, but still...maybe choose a different story if it's too much to cram into 4 minutes.

Which actually brings me to a good point. I think that's why she's seen as disingenuous. When you put out silly video after silly video, people aren't going to take you seriously when you want to be serious. Maybe she can change that, though, but not by releasing Dressin' Up.

I've never said that/thought that, don't tell what I didn't say. Finally, with the story, the army theme isn't off topic with the song, Katy doesn't want to feel what her boyfriend makes her feeling by cheating her, she joins the army to feel better, to show that she's trong, powerful and that she's ready to forget her story with this boy, to forget that way by changing her own life. Yes, the video is really good, I love the story and this kind of message.

I also never heard of Candyfornia.
It's just a music video, not her life story.

And that's basically the problem with it. It felt like the concept and video was supposed to be taken seriously throughout the whole thing, but it just came off as cheesy, overemotional, and kind of campy.

Oh I completely agree. Like I said I found the video to be incredibly immature. It fits in with the Teenage Dream theme but everyone connects to it being about Perry and Brand divorcing and it makes it look pretty silly. However, the song itself seemed like an immature and try hard response to her divorce. I'm ready for the next single/next era where she is supposed to be darker and more mature.
Then again Perry has always had an age issue. She pretended to be a 13 year old partying and drinking alcohol. She could've passed for 16/17 the way she was dressed and it's not that uncommon for teenagers that age to experiment with alcohol. However, she went for 13 which she didn't look that age and I don't think it's a good idea to condone 13 year olds to start drinking and partying.

When she's trying to make a poignant and emotional video--you know she treats this single very SERIOUSLY since it's being marketed with her divorce --it has to carry some impact. This isn't California Gurls. And the fact that the video is an obvious metaphor for her life right now only heightens these expectations.

Katy girlllll.
Every time I actually give this bitch a chance she disappoints (i.e. TOTGA, POM). The trailer for this video left me confused, but I just knew after watching the full product that she was going to serve us something groundbreaking and moving. It was just a long ass U.S. Marines commercial. I was expecting to see "Marines. The Few. The Proud" pop up at the end.
I guess though... As long as her fans like it, that's all that matters.
