I forgot where I read it therefore I won't be able to back this up, but that source (or interview) mentioned that his recording studio had to rush his album because they saw the potential after his first two collaboration materials (Nothin' On You and Billionaire) became big state-side and worldwide. I guess the album was a more of mash up of songs that they thought would be a big hit to everyone, trying to target a particular audience he might cater to - ergo the lack of cohesiveness, organic unity of the album.
Which is why I'm very excited for his second album.
