You have to take into consideration that superman, spider-man and wonderwoman are old superheroes from back in the day.Titanic took place in 1912, so of course you are not going to see a black character. Snow White, Cinderella ect were created back in the 30s and 40's. It's all about the time period . You have to know the history of this country.
I think you are thinking way too much into this. When I was growing up, I saw many black people on TV. Sister, Sister, Family Matters, The Cosby Show, A Different World, The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. ect and many more shows. There are black celebrities and we have black President. Black people has always been in the media. They are just not going to out number the white race, unfortunately.

Yeah, I'm sure that the Hollywood Foreign Press looked at her and thought "She was only good because she was a maid in the 60s".
They saw an awesome performance that happened to be in the 60s.
Did you know she's won before for playing the mother of a sexually abused boy? That sure sounds like a black stereotype to me
|
Once again, Im not talking about her performance in the movie. What the Hollywood Foreign Press said about her performance doesn't have anything to do with the fact that is was a role of a black maid struggling in the 60's. She did a great job.
And once again, no one is saying all the roles blacks get are Stereotypical.

Look at shows like The Real World. They barely cast a black person. Or primetime shows on CBS, ABC, etc. I think it's a little weird. But it's "the norm" now.

There are a lot more shows with Blacks as leads now though. House, 90210, Happy Endings, Community, Smallville at one point and a lotta shows have Black main characters without stereotypical roles.
How many shows can you think of with Asians, Browns or Latinos without stereotypical roles?

I love Viola to death but I don't see her career really taking off. I mean, after her performance in Doubt, she was in a Tyler Perry film. She even said after getting nominated, she thought things would change but they didn't. And god knows Octavia Spencer will probably never see the set of another feature film.
|
I want her to make it big so bad, not because she's black, but because she's so talented
Who knows? If she gets an Oscar, things could fall into place
Although on the other side, there's Gabourey Sidibe, who will literally never achieve the same acclaim she did before.

I am sure there have been cases when the girl is described as a blond with blue eyes in a book and they cast a brunette with blue eyes. The same thing should apply for the race.
|
But there's no reason to do so. Why change the characters as they appear in the book?

Blacks = Latinos in film to be honest. They get the same tired roles. If a black man isn't a gangster or drug dealer, it's the latino. If the latino women isn't a prostitute, promiscuous, secondary actress, loud/ghetto, girlfriend or maid... it's the black women. And so on.. they always play the characters that go through some sort of struggle unless they're the popular overused black/latino actors that have been swapped for the past 10 years that get the good roles.
The asians are always used for the fighting flicks. Everyone else gets their stereotypical roles.
Time hasn't changed.

Wow. They sure all look asian

That's called "whitewashing". Unfortunately, it's a very common occurrence in films about Asians when US film companies get involved. You see what happened to Goku in Dragonball: Evolution and Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender.

So now you're saying it's unacceptable to change the race of a character as they appear in a book?

A new agenda's due... At least we're waiting for this. I'm white but I wished i lived in a community in which I was a minority (bar being gay). I love black people and I wish they'd get more recognition in all areas.
Things are changing though... Several years ago, who thought a black man would be commanding the US?
Anti-white thread? Ch... If half the people in those pictures were white, this would be an anti-white thread. Not the case. About 80% of lead characters are white, and not 80% of the people in the world are white. Not even close.

i don't understand how some of you have really missed the point. In the entertainment industry (movies and television by far), minorities are grossly underrepresented. sure, there are some big names, but it's a predominately white field by a gross amount. All minorites are underrepresented. And imost are casted in borderline offensive stereotypical roles.

Well, it's a bit different when directed at the majority group atop the social hegemony as opposed to a historically oppressed minority. Prejudice is prejudice, but a black person talking about the "white devil" (for instance) isn't going to do anything to negate a white person's social advantage. The same can't be said for racism directed toward minority groups.
But I mostly think Fireman was doing some pandering.

But a lot of African American people had great contributions in both film and music. But I agree, we lack black people in the entertainment industry but I think that they're just not interested in being an actor/singer

I'm just speaking on what I see when I'm flipping through channels. It's very rare.
I remember Taraji P. Henson was on Wendy promoting a show where she was the lead female and she was saying how they didn't even put her in any of the promos. Which is weird.
I just wish some black actors didn't have to only be in Tyler Perry movies to get a damn lead role. People can sit here and say "Well you have a black person here.... AND OH here.", but the reality is that it's very rare.
