E is the most common letter in the English language. Z is the least common. Therefore, it's weird that there isn't an e in that long ass paragraph, while it's not surprising that there isn't a z.

(Assuming both start in the off position) He turns switch A on, and checks. If the lamp is on, switch A controls it, if it's off, switch B controls it.

He flips on switch 1 and 2 and does nothing to 3. He waits a minute or so, then flips switch 2 off. When he enters to room, if the light is on he knows it is switch 1. If the light is off, but hot to the touch, he knows it is switch 2. If the light is off, and not warm to touch, he knows it is switch 3.
